Wellness Watch Report: The Latest Fitness Industry Data on Member Behavior & Retention

August 12, 2026

The Wellness Watch Report is ABC Fitness’s ongoing look at the data behind member behavior, retention, and engagement, refreshed with every new edition. Each report draws on proprietary platform data from 30,000+ fitness businesses and 40 million members, paired with year-over-year consumer research, so the numbers reflect what’s actually happening on the gym floor and inside the studio, not what operators hope is happening. This page is where you’ll always find the latest edition first.

Current Edition Spotlight – MidYear 2026: The Reinforcement Shift

Released June 2026, the Summer 2026 edition of ABC Fitness Wellness Watch, The Reinforcement Shift, found that growth in the first half of the year had less to do with acquisition and everything to do with keeping the members operators already have.

  • Gyms: check-ins held essentially flat even as new joins fell 9% year over year and cancellations rose 8%, but the members who stayed kept showing up just as often.
  • Studios: check-ins jumped 27% year over year despite a 5% decline in new joins, pointing to a smaller but far more engaged studio member base.
  • Community: 67% of members now say community is their biggest driver of motivation and accountability, up 12% year over year.

Takeaway: growth is shifting from acquisition to reinforcement. Operators are winning by deepening the habits of the members they already have, not just filling the funnel.

Why This Matters for Operators

The Wellness Watch Report exists because member behavior is the best predictor of where the fitness industry is headed next. Retention, engagement, and revenue are all downstream of the same signals: how often members show up, what keeps them coming back, and where friction quietly pushes them out the door. Whatever edition you’re reading, the data here is meant to answer one practical question: what should you actually be doing differently this quarter to keep more of the members you already have?

How to Use This Data

Wellness Watch Report isn’t meant to sit in a downloads folder. A few practical ways operators put each edition to work:

  • Retention programs: use engagement benchmarks (like check-in trends) to spot where your own numbers are lagging or leading the industry.
  • Community initiatives: if the community keeps showing up as a top retention driver, audit whether your gym or studio gives members an easy way to connect, classes, challenges, digital groups.
  • Payment & onboarding friction: member behavior data often reveals where drop-off starts. Use it to pressure-test your own join and billing flow before members hit that same friction.

The goal is to use this data as a benchmark against your own club’s numbers.
