Defining Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging & Equity
Diversity is a broad topic; it’s an understanding that who we are when we are born and what shapes us, the experiences, the education and nurture and that varies and we are not a monolith and that homogeneity is not a desirable thing in society. It is diversity of race, color, ethnicity, sexual preferences, but it is also a diversity of opinions, thoughts, actions and intentionality. Inclusion is the result from thoughtfully practicing openness to Diversity. Finally, Equity is what will ensure the success of any Diversity & Inclusion initiative.
What we need to strive for is equality – equality in how people are treated, equality in opportunities and pay equality.
The Focus Moving Forward
Forums & Open Conversation
We are creating a forum for the leadership team to get together and have open & uncomfortable conversations. We think Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion, is something that is championed at the top and we want to ensure our leaders open their hearts and minds if needed through this forum. Simultaneously, we are engaging in dialogue with our employees on what they perceive to be our gaps on this initiative.
We are encouraging our employees to take their Community Days Off to engage in any civic movement of their choice. Additionally, we as an organization will look for opportunities to engage in meaningful dialogue so we can continue to learn.
We recognize the need for reinforcement on important topics and with that in mind are launching “The Unconscious Bias” training. We will continue to introduce other resources on Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion.
We are committing to achieving pay equality in 3 years.
We will launch a Diversity Recruitment Program for experienced hires and an internship program to partner with underrepresented communities.
